Growth at 2 Years

At 2 years, children have typically quadrupled their birth weight and grown about 35 cm (14 in) since birth. The average 2-year-old boy weighs about 12.7 kg (28 lb) and stands 86.5 cm (34 in) tall. Girls average about 12.1 kg (26.6 lb) and 85 cm (33.5 in).

The Half-Height Rule

An old guideline suggests that a child's height at age 2 is roughly half their adult height. While not perfectly accurate, it gives a reasonable estimate. For a more precise prediction, try our height predictor, which uses the Khamis-Roche method accounting for parental heights.

BMI Tracking Begins

Starting at age 2, pediatricians begin tracking BMI-for-age in addition to weight and height. A BMI between the 5th and 85th percentile is considered healthy weight. Below the 5th is underweight; above the 85th is overweight. Use our BMI-for-age calculator for a personalized assessment.

Switching to Standing Height

At 2 years, doctors switch from measuring recumbent length (lying down) to standing height. Standing height is typically about 0.7–1 cm shorter than recumbent length, so you may notice a small apparent decrease — this is not actual shrinkage, just a measurement change.

Frequently Asked Questions

The average 2-year-old boy weighs about 12.7 kg (28 lb), and the average girl weighs about 12.1 kg (26.6 lb). Normal weight ranges from about 10.2–16.1 kg (22.5–35.5 lb) between the 3rd and 97th percentiles.

Average height at 2 years is about 86.5 cm (34 in) for boys and 85 cm (33.5 in) for girls. The normal range spans from about 81–92 cm (32–36 in).

This is a rough approximation. A 2-year-old boy's height is approximately 49% of his adult height, and a girl's is about 53%. For a more accurate prediction, use our height predictor which factors in parental heights.

For 2-year-olds, a BMI between the 5th and 85th percentile is considered healthy weight. The average BMI at age 2 is about 16.5–16.6 kg/m². BMI-for-age accounts for the natural body composition changes children go through as they grow.
